 About the Crop

Mamra almonds are a traditional variety of Prunus dulcis, cultivated primarily in select regions with dry continental climates.

Almond trees begin fruiting after 3–4 years and reach stable commercial yield between 6–8 years. Mamra cultivation is typically less industrialised compared to mass-market almond farming, resulting in comparatively lower yield but denser kernels.

The almond fruit consists of a green outer hull enclosing a hard shell that protects the edible kernel. After maturity, the hull splits open naturally, allowing for harvesting. The nuts are then dried, shelled, and graded.

Mamra almonds are known for their naturally irregular shape, thicker texture, and higher oil content compared to standard Californian varieties.

Afghanistan:
Harvest typically takes place between August and September. Afghanistan is widely regarded as the primary producer of White Mamra almonds. The dry mountainous terrain and mineral-rich soil contribute to the almond’s characteristic density and natural oil richness. Traditional cultivation methods and lower irrigation intensity are often associated with deeper flavour development.

India (Jammu & Kashmir region):
Limited cultivation of Mamra-type almonds occurs in northern high-altitude regions. Harvest typically takes place between August and September. Production volumes remain relatively small compared to commercial Californian varieties.

Iran:
Harvest generally occurs between August and September. Iran is another key producer of Mamra and oil-rich almond varieties. Climatic similarities to Afghan growing regions support dense kernel formation and strong flavour profile.

Harvest timing may vary depending on rainfall patterns, altitude, orchard maturity, and irrigation methods. Because Mamra almonds are not cultivated on the same industrial scale as standard commercial almonds, their overall production remains comparatively limited.
